CUPPING THERAPY - Holistic Treatment
WHAT is CUPPING THERAPY?
Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. Cupping dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.
It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The suction then helps facilitate healing with blood flow within the body. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the suction cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.Cupping can also help facilitate the flow of “qi” in the body. Qi is a Chinese word meaning life force or one’s vitality or energy level(s).

BENEFITS of CUPPING THERAPY:
The skin is the largest organ in the body containing a network of blood vessels, blood, fluids, nerve endings, glands and it connects to muscles via connective tissue. Thus, Cupping Therapy can influence the internal organs with external stimulation of the skin.
Cupping Therapy (moving cupping) increases circulation of both the blood and lymphatic system. This results in flushing toxins from the body. Toxins and waste products are collected and removed my the lymphatic system, boosting the immune system. The circulation of fresh lymph and blood nourishes the tissue with oxygen, nutrients and hormones nourishing the entire body.

HOW it WORKS:
Cupping is performed using specialized glass or silicone cups shaped like a jar. This process is performed as a dry procedure. Dry cupping is completely non-invasive and requires no puncture to the skin. At Yoga Fits Me, we offer two types of dry cupping therapy:
- Vacuum Cupping that is performed with a mechanical device used to suction the air out of the cups or with silicone cups which can move from place to place on your skin for a massage-like effect. Both vacuum cupping techniques are great for muscular/skeletal issues and disorders.
- Fire Cupping that is performed by soaking a cotton ball in almost pure alcohol. The cotton is clamped by a pair of forceps and lit via candle, and, in one motion, placed into the cup and quickly removed, while the cup is placed on the skin. The fire uses up all the oxygen in the cup which creates a negative pressure inside the cup. The cup is then quickly placed onto the body and the negative pressure "sucks" the skin up. Fire cupping is great for treating common cold symptoms like fevers and congestion; nasal congestion and sinus issues; chronic fatigue; insomnia; skin disorders like acne, eczema, psoriasis; digestive issues, high blood pressure.
During both procedure techniques, the cups are placed in strategic areas and suctioned to the skin. This suction will pull the skin into the cup and allow the fluids of the body to flow more freely, improving flow. The cups are generally left in place for 3 to 10 minutes. While cupping can result in bruising, soreness, and other mild side effects, it can provide lasting improvement that patients find worthwhile.
*** Please note the circular marks from cupping therapy can vary in color and last up to 10 days, however, the skin's appearance generally returns to normal with 3-5 days.
